Spring is here!!

It has been a pretty mild winter here at the sanctuary. It is still wonderful to see the birds returning and the daffodils getting ready to bloom. Spring means lots of chores and clean up. A winter’s worth of poop awaits in all the fields. Days of york raking and moving piles are in the near future. We are keening awaiting the return of our Purple Martins :). This type of bird is in decline due to habit loss and broad use of insecticides. They rely on flying insects to survive. Thankfully we have a large supply of those. LOL. So many bugs. Last year was the first year for our colony to fledge young. The previous year we had juveniles check out the housing and amazingly they returned to nest. This is very exciting!! We have our fingers crossed that the birds that nested here last year return and that some of the offspring decide to nest here as well. We have added housing in hopes we get more pairs. Ever hopeful. We have also expanded the bluebird housing this year. Each year we seek to upgrade the sanctuary to meet the needs of all the residents. Feathered and furred. Bluebirds and tree swallows nest here each year. We are so happy to see the progress of our program to utilize the farm for songbirds that are threatened or declining.
